Why Canada Has Its Own SDS Standards (WHMIS)
Canada's hazard communication framework is WHMIS, the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System, implemented through the Hazardous Products Act (HPA) and the Hazardous Products Regulations (HPR). When Canada updated WHMIS to align with the latest version of GHS, it did so through an amendment to the HPR, with a transition period that closed in 2025. So as of today, a compliant Canadian SDS must be built to the Amended HPR aligned with GHS Revision 7, not the older WHMIS 2015 (GHS Rev. 5) sheets that some legacy documents still follow.
A US OSHA HazCom sheet or an EU REACH/CLP sheet does not automatically satisfy Canadian rules. The classification criteria, regulatory references, supplier details, and, critically, the language requirements differ enough that a sheet from another market will not pass.

Do I need an SDS specifically for Canada to sell on Amazon.ca?

The backbone of SDS compliance worldwide is the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) — a framework developed by the United Nations. The GHS is not international law; each country chooses to adopt some or all of its provisions, which is why an SDS that's compliant in one market may not be compliant in another.
